A court Sunday convicted a South Korean woman of brokering sham marriages to dozens of illegal immigrants.
The Jeonju District Court sentenced the woman, identified only by her surname Kim, to 2 1/2 years in jail for arranging false marriages to 20 illegal immigrants from Southeast Asian countries with Korean women working at drinking bars and coffee shops.
The 33-year-old Kim took 150 million won ($137,000) from the men for three years starting in April 2011, who used the false marriages to stay in South Korea.
Kim, who was married to a Sri Lankan in 2006, was also convicted of fabricating marriage documents and being falsely married to nine other foreigners between 2011-2014. (Yonhap)
