LG Display plans to supply advanced organic light-emitting diode displays to Mercedes-Benz, industry sources said Wednesday, marking the first time a carmaker has adopted the advanced screen technology.
The South Korean display-maker will supply 12.3-inch P-OLED displays for the New E-Class produced by the German carmaker, according to the industry sources.
The screen will be composed of two segments, each displaying different information including an instrument cluster.
Industry watchers estimate that the E-Class models would take up 42 percent of the carmakers’ combined shipment.
The P-OLED paves the way for manufacturers to make diverse designs compared to other glass-based liquid crystal displays. It is also far lighter and boasts improved resolution.
LG Display earlier said it planned to boast $2 billion in sales from the automobile display sector, and become the No. 1 player globally by taking up 30 percent of the market.
South Korea is the only country in the world with companies that mass-produce P-OLED products, with the other being Samsung Display.
The company is also seeking to make similar ties with other carmakers around the globe, industry watchers added. (Yonhap)
