N. Korea urges ‘substantive’ action against leaflets

North Korea called on South Korea Monday to take “substantive” steps to block the cross-border spread of anti-Pyongyang leaflets.

The North’s main newspaper Rodong Sinmun described it as the “worst obstacle” to inter-Korean ties and warned of larger military conflicts.

The scattering of such leaflets is a “grave hostile act” to exacerbate confrontation between the two Koreas and could lead to armed clashes and even war, the newspaper said in a commentary.

“The rash act of scattering leaflets has become the worst obstacle to north-south relations,” it said.

The North’s communist regime has been highly sensitive about the distribution of leaflets by conservative activists.

Last week, it opened fire at balloons carrying leaflets near the inter-Korean border, triggering return fire from the South.

Some of the North’s rounds landed in the South’s territory. (Yonhap)
