Japan’s Foreign Visitor Numbers Hit New Records as Tourism Boom Continues

Japan’s tourism sector continued its strong expansion in 2025, with foreign visitor arrivals reaching record levels as robust demand from overseas travelers and a weaker yen supported growth across the industry.

Government data showed inbound tourism remained above pre-pandemic levels, extending a recovery that has accelerated since international travel restrictions were lifted. Visitor arrivals reached new highs, reinforcing Japan’s position as one of Asia’s most popular travel destinations.

Major destinations including Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka continued to attract large numbers of travelers, boosting demand for hotels, transportation services and tourist attractions.

The weaker yen has helped make Japan more affordable for international visitors, while expanded flight capacity has improved access from key overseas markets. Spending by foreign tourists has become an increasingly important source of support for businesses ranging from retailers and restaurants to accommodation operators.

The surge in arrivals has also raised concerns about overcrowding in some of the country’s most visited destinations. In response, authorities have stepped up efforts to promote tourism in regional areas beyond Japan’s major urban centers in an attempt to spread visitor demand more evenly.

Tourism remains a growing contributor to Japan’s economy, with record visitor numbers underscoring the sector’s importance as policymakers seek additional sources of growth amid long-term demographic challenges.
