Rescue efforts for missing crewmen to resume Tuesday

The suspended rescue operation for those missing from a South Korean fishing vessel that sank off Russia’s far east is expected to resume later this week, the ship’s owner said Monday.

So far, seven crew members — one Russian, five Indonesians and one Filipino — have been rescued from the Oryong 501, which capsized in the western Bering Sea last Monday.

Twenty-seven have been confirmed dead, while 26 others remained missing.

Rescue operations have been suspended due to inclement weather since Sunday, but there is a chance they may be resumed as early as Tuesday, Sajo Industries said.

“The winds are too strong and the waves too high for us to continue searching for the missing at the moment,” the company said. “But we expect to resume as early as Tuesday night when the weather is believed to get better.”

Twelve ships from Russia and South Korea that were looking for the missing have moved to Cape Navarin, about a day away from the accident site, the company said, adding two South Korean maritime patrol planes will likely be deployed as scheduled on Monday regardless of weather conditions. (Yonhap)
