India is stepping up its engagement across the Indo-Pacific as Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins a multi-country visit aimed at strengthening economic, security and strategic partnerships with key regional allies.

The trip, which includes Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, reflects New Delhi’s broader effort to reinforce its presence in the Indo-Pacific while expanding cooperation on trade, maritime security, critical technologies and supply-chain resilience.

Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. Discussions are expected to focus on defense cooperation, investment, clean energy, digital technology and regional security.

India has increasingly positioned itself as a strategic partner for countries seeking to diversify economic and security relationships across the Indo-Pacific. The government’s “Act East” policy has placed greater emphasis on strengthening ties with Southeast Asia while deepening cooperation with long-standing partners including Australia and Japan.

The visit comes as governments across the region seek to reinforce economic resilience through expanded trade and investment while addressing shared concerns over maritime security and supply-chain stability.

Australia and India have continued to strengthen economic cooperation through trade initiatives, critical minerals partnerships and defense collaboration. Indonesia has also emerged as an important regional partner as both countries seek closer cooperation in infrastructure, digital connectivity and maritime affairs.

The New Zealand leg of the tour carries additional diplomatic significance, marking the first official visit by an Indian prime minister in decades. Officials from both countries are expected to discuss expanding commercial ties following recent progress in bilateral trade negotiations.

Regional analysts say India’s expanding diplomatic engagement reflects its growing role as both an economic and strategic power in the Indo-Pacific. As governments pursue closer cooperation across technology, energy and defense, New Delhi is seeking to play a more prominent role in shaping regional economic integration and security partnerships.

The outcome of the meetings is expected to influence future cooperation across a range of sectors as Indo-Pacific governments continue to strengthen partnerships in response to evolving geopolitical and economic challenges.
