American pop art master Andy Warhol’s work was accidentally discarded in the Netherlands by an official’s mistake.
According to CNN on the 26th, local authorities in Mashorst, southern Netherlands, announced that they had requested an independent agency to investigate Warhol’s work after confirming that it had disappeared in the process of organizing its artworks.
The missing work was created in the 1980s and is a silkscreen portrait of former Dutch Queen Beatrix.
Authorities suspect the work was accidentally thrown away along with large amounts of waste and is unlikely to be recovered.
In addition to Warhol’s work, 45 other artworks were abandoned in a similar way, with an estimated value of 22,000 euros.
It is understood that the works were all left in the basement during the renovation of the local government building, and were moved to another location after being damaged by flooding in 2023.
