There is a widespread claim on TikTok that rubbing banana peels on your face has a Botox-like effect

Influencers claimed in the video that banana skin has an anti-aging effect as a ‘natural botox’ that removes dead skin cells, improves wrinkles, and makes skin glow.

Influencers posted actual reviews through videos one after another. “I’ve been rubbing banana peel on my face every morning for months,” influencer Carly Thompson said on her SNS account. “My skin feels brighter and healthier than before.”

Introducing how to rub the inside of the banana peel on the face and wash it off 10 minutes later, Selina Dalitsiva said, “The banana peel softens the skin and tightens the pores, giving it the same effect as Botox.” She added, “Bananas are rich in antioxidants and help prevent aging.”

Another influencer Kate also said, “You can simply rub the inside of the banana peel all over your face. It is excellent for removing dead skin cells and hydrating moisture.” She added, “Banana peel contains enzymes that act as natural Botox. It is good for improving fine wrinkles and fine lines.”

However, dermatologists pointed out that banana peels cannot actually have the same effect as Botox, and rubbing them against the skin can irritate the skin.

There are no foods or supplements that have the same effect as Botox injections, said Dr. Gita Yadav, a dermatologist in Toronto, USA. “The banana peel contains antioxidants, but it is unlikely to have a Botox-level effect on the skin.”

The Daily Mail said, “The banana peel skin care method has become popular because bananas contain lutein, an antioxidant that helps brighten skin and reduce wrinkles.”

In response, experts pointed out, “The banana peel contains lutein, but if you rub it directly on the skin, it is not absorbed properly, and the concentration of lutein is not high enough to produce noticeable results.”

“There is no scientific evidence that rubbing banana peels on your face helps wrinkles, dark circles, or inflammation,” dermatologist Dr. Taylor Bullock said. “It is much better to apply antioxidant-rich cosmetics.”

In fact, antioxidants are contained not only in banana peels, but also in blueberries, green tea, and cocoa, and can help prevent skin damage caused by free oxygen.

However, it is unlikely that antioxidants will penetrate deeply into the skin and show an effect simply by rubbing banana skin on the skin. Rather, if you use a shell that has not been properly washed, you are at risk of exposure to residual pesticides.
