Former BIGBANG member Seungri is facing an aggravated assault complaint in Seoul, with police investigating allegations that he assaulted a man in his 30s during a dispute at a restaurant.
The case has drawn renewed attention after photos purporting to show Seungri at a drinking gathering around the time of the alleged incident surfaced online Sunday.
Police have not established that an assault took place, and the circumstances surrounding the photographs have not been independently verified.
Seungri, whose legal name is Lee Seung-hyun, has denied assaulting the man. He has acknowledged holding a liquor bottle during an argument but said he never swung it or threatened the complainant.
The investigation remains at an early stage.
Complaint Filed in August
Seoul’s Gangnam Police Station received a criminal complaint against Seungri on Aug. 26, according to police.
The complainant, a man in his 30s, alleges that Seungri assaulted him at a restaurant in Seoul’s Gangnam district. The complaint reportedly seeks punishment for aggravated assault, a charge that involves the alleged use of a dangerous object.
Police said they were still working to establish the details of the incident and that the complainant had not yet been formally interviewed when the case was first reported.
The police investigation is therefore not yet at a stage where authorities have publicly determined what happened.
According to Seungri’s account, the incident occurred on the morning of Aug. 8, between roughly 6 a.m. and 6:40 a.m., at a Korean soup restaurant in Gangnam.
That timing and location have been presented by Seungri as part of his account of the incident and should not be interpreted as a final police finding.
Seungri Says There Was an Argument, but No Assault
Seungri has acknowledged that an argument occurred.
According to his account, he was eating with two acquaintances when an intoxicated man at another table repeatedly asked to join them.
Seungri said the man claimed to have a business idea and continued trying to start a conversation despite being asked to leave the group alone.
During the disagreement, Seungri said he picked up a liquor bottle.
But he strongly denied using it as a weapon.
He said he did not swing the bottle, threaten the man or physically assault him.
Seungri also said the confrontation eventually ended without violence.
According to his account, the two men later sat together, talked and drank. He said they exchanged telephone numbers and that the man even saw him off when he left the restaurant.
Seungri further claimed that the man contacted him several hours later and said he would bring a business proposal the following week.
The former singer said he was therefore surprised when he later learned that a criminal complaint had been filed.
Those details have been provided by Seungri and have not been independently confirmed by police.
Evidence Seungri Says He Has Secured
Seungri has said that he has evidence that he believes will help clarify what happened.
He has referred to text messages exchanged with the complainant, surveillance footage from inside the restaurant and statements from people who witnessed the encounter.
He has also mentioned testimony from a parking attendant who allegedly saw the complainant see him off after the gathering.
Seungri said he intends to cooperate with investigators and present the material during the police inquiry.
He has also said he is considering a countercomplaint alleging a false accusation involving people who were with him at the time.
Whether any of those materials support his account will ultimately be determined through the investigation.
At present, there has been no public police finding validating either side’s version of events.
New Photos Surface Online
The case took another turn Sunday after photographs showing Seungri at what appears to be a drinking gathering circulated online.
A foreign internet user who identified as a Seungri fan reportedly posted the photographs on social media, saying they were taken in August.
The images show Seungri with several people at a table. A birthday cake, food and several bottles of soju can be seen on the table.
Seungri appears relaxed and smiling in the photographs, wearing a black cap and black shirt.
Some online users have claimed that the photographs were taken on the day of the alleged incident.
That claim, however, has not been independently verified.
Reports on Sunday noted that the exact date and circumstances in which the photographs were taken could not be confirmed from the images alone.
The identity of the other people appearing in the photographs has also not been officially established.
In particular, there is no confirmed evidence that a man appearing in the photographs is the person who filed the complaint.
The photographs therefore should not be treated as proof either that an assault did or did not occur.
What the Photos Do — and Do Not — Show
The images have generated considerable interest because they appear to show Seungri in a social setting with alcohol and in a seemingly relaxed mood.
But photographs taken before, during or after a disagreement cannot by themselves establish whether an assault occurred.
They also cannot establish the exact sequence of events without independent information confirming when and where they were taken.
For that reason, the significance of the photographs will depend on whether investigators can establish their date and context.
If they were taken at the location and time described in the complaint, they could potentially become relevant to the investigation.
If they were taken at another time, their relevance could be limited.
At this point, neither possibility has been established publicly.
Police Investigation Is Still in Its Early Stages
The police investigation is expected to begin with interviews and a review of available evidence.
Investigators will need to hear the complainant’s account, examine Seungri’s response and determine whether witnesses, surveillance footage or other material can establish what happened.
The existence of a criminal complaint does not mean that the allegations have been proven.
That distinction is particularly important in a case involving a highly recognizable former entertainer whose previous legal troubles continue to shape public reaction.
As of Sept. 13, police have not announced a finding that Seungri committed aggravated assault.
The case remains an allegation under investigation.
Why the Case Has Drawn International Attention
The latest complaint has attracted attention far beyond the immediate allegations because of Seungri’s history with one of South Korea’s biggest entertainment scandals.
Seungri was a member of BIGBANG, one of the K-pop groups that helped establish South Korean pop music as a major international cultural export.
He left the group and announced his retirement from the entertainment industry in 2019 amid the wider Burning Sun scandal.
The controversy began around a Seoul nightclub associated with Seungri and expanded into a much broader criminal investigation involving allegations of prostitution-related offenses, gambling, embezzlement and other misconduct.
The scandal became a major test of South Korea’s entertainment industry and prompted intense scrutiny of relationships among celebrities, business operators and law enforcement.
Seungri was subsequently prosecuted on nine criminal charges.
In May 2022, South Korea’s Supreme Court upheld an 18-month prison sentence after finding him guilty on the charges brought against him, including habitual gambling, arranging prostitution, embezzlement and other offenses.
He completed his sentence and was released in February 2023.
Those convictions are separate from the current assault complaint.
A New Allegation, but Not a New Conviction
The distinction between the two cases is important.
Seungri’s previous convictions were decided through the South Korean court system and resulted in a prison sentence.
The current case has not reached that stage.
No court has found Seungri guilty of assault in connection with the new complaint.
Police are still investigating the allegations, and the complainant has yet to have his account fully examined in the early stages of the inquiry.
The outcome could depend on evidence including surveillance footage, witness statements, messages and other records from the day in question.
What Happens Next
The immediate focus will be on establishing the circumstances of the alleged confrontation.
Police are expected to interview the complainant and examine relevant evidence before determining whether further questioning of Seungri or other people is necessary.
Investigators may also seek to verify the surveillance footage and other materials that Seungri says he has retained.
The newly circulated photographs could become relevant if their date, location and participants can be independently established.
Until then, they remain unverified material circulating online rather than confirmed evidence of what occurred.
The case also illustrates the difficulty of separating a new allegation from the history of a celebrity who has already been at the center of a major criminal scandal.
For Seungri, the latest complaint has once again placed his name in the spotlight.
But the central question remains unresolved.
Police must determine what happened during the reported confrontation in Gangnam, whether the evidence supports the complainant’s allegations and whether Seungri’s account is consistent with the available evidence.
For now, the former BIGBANG member faces a criminal complaint — not a conviction — and the investigation remains ongoing.
