Italy, a ‘cultural heritage powerhouse’, has decided to use artificial intelligence (AI) to protect artifacts

Italy’s Ministry of Culture announced plans to improve the artifact theft prevention and surveillance system that uses AI, big data analysis, and cybersecurity to recognize suspicious behavior around artifacts.

“While complying with privacy regulations, we analyze the video to detect abnormal or suspicious behavior and to operate predictive alerts in a timely manner,” Italy’s Ministry of Culture said in a statement.

“This AI-based system, which uses specially trained algorithms, can recognize behavior patterns and danger signals with increasing accuracy,” the ministry added.

The plan will cost 70 million euros in funding from Europe, the Italian Ministry of Culture explained.

In addition, he emphasized that “the safety of cultural heritage is the top priority,” but did not mention the theft at the Louvre.

According to foreign media, a four-member thief broke into the Louvre Museum in France the day before and stole jewelry and ran away in seven minutes.

They broke into the museum using a ladder truck, broke two high-performance security glass displays, stole jewelry, and fled on a scooter before being arrested.
