Citing China’s National Intellectual Property Office, Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on Sunday that the patent application for Baidu’s animal language translation technology was filed in December last year. The SCMP said the evaluation process for patent applications can take as long as one year or as long as five years.
According to Baidu, the technology collects various types of data, including animal voice and body language, behavioral changes, and other biological signs, and then analyzes animal emotions by using various sub-fields of AI such as machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing. Baidu did not reveal any details about future plans related to patent applications, including whether it plans to release a new app for understanding animal languages. Several companies around the world have continued their efforts to translate animal sounds into human languages, but they are still at the level of estimating the meaning or emotional state of the sounds. Baidu, which launched China’s first AI chatbot “Erniebot” after the ChatGPT craze, officially declared its “AI First” strategy and has developed and introduced technologies in various fields such as autonomous driving technology using AI. Along with animal language conversion technology, Baidu has also applied for patent applications for real-time streaming shopping recommendation algorithms and self-driving algorithms equipped with electric vehicle charging station reservation and navigation functions.
