How would you assess Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s first six months in office?

She’s a good talker and good on the media, but that is only of superficial value.

The consumption tax cut is taking a long time. The only thing I can think of her doing is cutting petrol duty and then subsidizing petrol. We have three cars and drive something like 25,000km a year, but I think it this unfair on people who don’t have cars or do but barely drive. Japanese city dwellers subsidize inaka enough as it is.

I think it is really bad that Takaichi opposes a female emperor and separate names for married couples. This is backward thinking and I think she is doing it performatively, i.e., screwing other women for her own advancement (“look at me, I’m tough” etc.).
