Stereotypes about winter fashion are breaking down in Korea

Short-sleeved knitwear and shorts have become a trend this winter, especially among young people.

According to Zigzag, a fashion platform operated by Kakao Style, short-sleeved knitwear transactions increased 158% year-on-year as of December last year.

Short-sleeved knitwear, which is difficult to see as a general winter item, is strong because it can be used for Layered. Short-sleeved knitwear is also useful in the winter season as it can be warmed and styled by wearing not only an outerwear but also a shirt or long-sleeved T-shirt.

In particular, the Nordic pattern, which is considered the epitome of winter patterns, has gained popularity by reinterpreting it with short-sleeved knitwear. The transaction volume of Nordic short-sleeved knitwear surged 696 percent year-on-year. Analysts say that the pattern, which used to be applied mainly to thick knitwear or muffler, has expanded into a light and cheerful silhouette, attracting consumers’ reaction. Bottoms are still popular this winter. During the same period, the transaction volume of wool shorts increased by 1006 percent year-on-year.

It is characterized by an increase in demand for shorts made of materials that strengthen warmth such as wool and fleece in consideration of cold weather. The choice of materials that add a sense of season to the lively atmosphere of a short length is supporting the winter shorts trend.

Due to the popularity of the shorts, consumption of related items also increased. The transaction volume of “optical stockings” that are good to match with the shorts increased by 694% year-on-year, and the knee-high Overny Sachs increased by 144%.

It is explained that the perfection of winter shorts looks is increasing as styling that reveals personality by using color and pattern stockings or knee socks spreads.

An industry official said, “As more consumers actively want to express their tastes and styles even in winter, items with blurred season divisions are drawing attention,” adding, “Consumption trends that enjoy layering and styling will continue, focusing on highly utilized items such as short-sleeved knitwear and shorts.”
