Starbucks Korea recalls paper packs and re-created them as upcycling goods

Starbucks Korea announced that it will expand the paper pack recovery pilot project to the Cheongju area following Daejeon.

Starbucks started collecting paper packs at 58 stores in Daejeon in October last year. Starting this month, the company will collect paper packs at more than 90 stores in Cheongju. Over the past year, the company collected about 46 tons of paper packs and introduced them as upcycling products such as notes and postcards. Starbucks explained that this brings environmental effects such as planting 900 trees.

Paper packs recovered at stores are classified into milk cartons (normal packs) and sterilized packs. Unlike sterilized packs with composite structures such as pulp and aluminum, milk cartons with a simple structure centered on natural pulp can be recycled as a resource. The milk cartons recovered by Starbucks have been reborn as eco-friendly products by processing them into recycled paper (30 percent of milk cartons).

Kim Ji-young, head of ESG (Environmental, Social Responsibility, and Corporate Governance), said, “The paper pack recovery project is a meaningful activity that sends a message that if you pay a little more attention to separate emissions in your daily life, abandoned resources can be reborn as new products.”
