China has succeeded in building an undersea data center using wind energy for the first time in the world.
According to the state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 21st, the data center was established at a depth of 10 meters in the sea near Shanghai’s Ringang Special District.
With a total of 1.6 billion yuan invested, the project is characterized by running more than 95% on eco-friendly power. The authorities explained that this reduced energy consumption by 22.8%, water use by 100%, and land use by more than 90%.
Unlike existing land-based data centers, this project is designed with a new concept structure that combines renewable energy such as offshore wind and data infrastructure.
The completion is a significant milestone in the development of undersea data centers and offshore renewable energy convergence, the Lingang District Management Committee said. “It is symbolic in that it increases the utilization of offshore wind power in the region and presents a new model for building low-carbon computing infrastructure.”
