A life-size hologram police officer installed in the middle of downtown Seoul draws attention from foreign media

This is because it has a significant effect on preventing crime at night. In fact, the crime rate has decreased by more than 20% since the introduction of the hologram technology. On the 10th, the BBC, a British public broadcaster, introduced the system’s operation and its effectiveness in preventing crime through a video report titled “How Korea utilizes holographic police to prevent crime.”

The system was installed by the Seoul Central Police Station in October last year at Jeodong 3 Park in Jung-gu. Through cooperation between a professional company and the Jung-gu District Office, the system was implemented by projecting images onto a transparent acrylic board that is the size of a real person.

It appears every two minutes from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. every day and repeats the announcement, and the system is linked to the control center in real time.

BBC reporters visited the park and checked the actual images of the holographic police. They also reported interviews with citizens who gave positive assessments to the holographic police, including “It seems to be less effective in preventing crime than the actual police,” and “a good device that allows women to travel alone with confidence.”

The BBC pointed out that the place where the technology was applied is an area with high night crime concerns due to the concentration of entertainment facilities, and evaluated that attempts to strengthen security using technology could be a realistic alternative.

Other major foreign media outlets, including NBC and DW in Germany, also posted related videos on their YouTube channels, paying attention to Korea’s unusual introduction of security technology. Citing Korean police, media outlets reported that the crime rate in the region has decreased by 22 percent since the installation of the hologram police information board.

Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) also praised the effectiveness of the technology, saying, “Crime reports have decreased by more than a fifth since the installation of holographic police officers.”
