Police warn against the recent spread of a social media trend called “AI homelessness man prank” in the United States and the United Kingdom

According to foreign media such as the BBC and NDTV on the 8th, the trend of using artificial intelligence (AI) among some SNS users to make fake photos that appear to have appeared in the house or at work and transmit them to family or friends.

Photos are as sophisticated as real photos using Google’s generative artificial intelligence “Gemini.”

The problem is that such mischief is misunderstood as a real situation, leading to reports and police dispatch.

In Dorset, England, a teenage girl sent an AI image to her parents with a message saying, “This man came into my house and he refuses to leave,” and her parents reported it and police were rushed.

Police later said they “used valuable resources that could have been put into actual emergencies.” They then issued an official statement saying, “If you receive these images or messages from your friends or family, you should first check if they are not kidding before you press 999.”

In Oak Harbor High School, Washington, the U.S., social media posts about homeless people wandering around the school spread, but it turned out to be AI manipulation.

Some social media users pointed out that “the trend risks potential damage, undermining humanity against homeless people, and exploiting AI as a means of spreading false information.”
