A cafe in Yunnan Province in southwestern China has launched coffee using local specialty Peniburn mushrooms, drawing attention from local gourmets

According to Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 15th, Porif Coffee, a famous cafe in Yunnan Province in southwest China, introduced penny-burn mushroom cheese americano and penny-burn mushroom haute milk latte using local specialties such as penny-burn mushrooms and coffee.

Pennyburn Mushroom Cheese americano is characterized by a mushroom-shaped pennyburn cookie topped with pennyburn mushroom powder, coffee and cheese cream. Pennyburn Mushroom Oatmeal Latte is a coffee with pennyburn mushroom powder and oatmeal. Each coffee costs about 23 yuan per cup. In Yunnan Province, the “wild mushroom season” is held between June and September every year, during which Chinese foodies flock to the region to eat delicious mushrooms. The most delicious and expensive wild mushrooms are the pennyburn mushrooms, termite mushrooms, and pine mushrooms.

In addition, Yunnan Province is a city with more than 100 years of history in the coffee industry. Recently, amid growing interest in coffee quality around the world, it is attracting attention as a specialty coffee producer.

The new coffee is only available for store purchase. According to the cafe, 50 to 70 cups of coffee made of Peniburn mushrooms are sold a day, and many people visit the store to drink this coffee.

Many people are praising the taste. “I went to the cafe and had a peniburn mushroom oat milk latte, and I felt a subtle mushroom scent,” a visitor told the Metropolis Times, a local media outlet in Kunming, Yunnan Province.

However, Porif Coffee said it is not certain whether it will continue to sell mushroom coffee next year due to fluctuations in the price of Peniburn mushrooms. As of August, the price of Peniburn mushrooms is 40 to 80 yuan per kilogram.
