Waldorf Astoria, a famous hotel in New York, the background of the movie “The Scent of a Woman,” was acquired by a Chinese company and reopened after 8 years of remodeling

According to the New York Times on Wednesday, the hotel will take reservations from September. Fees start from 1,500 dollars per room per night. The Waldorf Hotel in midtown Manhattan of New York was built in 1931 when the Depression was over. It is famous for accommodation where many heads of state and celebrities visit New York. Nikita Khrushchev, secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, also stayed at the hotel during the Cold War in 1959. Former President Park Chung-hee of Kim Dae Jung Roh Moo Hyun Park Geun Hye also stayed at the hotel while visiting New York.

In 2014, Anbang Insurance Group of China acquired the hotel from Hilton Group for $1.95 billion. Since then, the ownership of the Waldorf Hotel has been transferred to multilateral insurance as its corporate assets were transferred to China’s state-owned multilateral insurance in 2018 due to allegations of corruption by Anbang Group Chairman. In 2017, remodeling began to convert the high-rise part of the hotel into a luxury apartment and modernize the rooms. The construction period was originally planned to be two years, but the completion was delayed due to the bankruptcy of Anbang Group.
