Google enhances online search capabilities

According to AFP on the 20th, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said at the opening ceremony of the annual developer conference in Silicon Valley, California, that decades of research are paying off with new technologies and that a new AI mode will be added to Google search engines.

The new AI mode is a complete reconstruction of the search engine with more advanced reasoning functions, he said. “You can ask longer and more complex questions and go deeper through follow-up questions.”

Liz Reed, Google’s search chief, said the new AI mode allows advanced reasoning, multi-mode, and users to perform more in-depth searches. “This mode searches the entire web much deeper than traditional searches,” Reed said.

Google first introduced the AI Overview feature, which summarizes search results and shares links to results, at a developer event a year ago. As for the feature, analysts feared that switching from the Google search results page to AI-generated summaries would reduce the opportunity to publish profitable advertisements that are at the heart of the company’s business model.

Google has also introduced various AI innovation technologies that are being developed or distributed along with search functions at the conference. They include real-time voice translation, virtual clothes that use personal photos (test-wearing), and technology that automatically searches for the desired product and purchases it when the price drops.

Google will also introduce an “agent” function on its Chrome and Gemini AI apps so that AI can handle online tasks independently. Unlike the existing search function, the AI can search the web to find a sale or even make a reservation for a tour. The feature will be released for paid subscribers first.
