The 14th typhoon NANMADOL, the second super-strong autumn typhoon after Hinamno, landed near Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan, at around 7 p.m. on the 18th. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a special warning for Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures in Kyushu, where the typhoon landed, calling it a dangerous typhoon that had never been experienced in the past. Special warnings have been issued to Okinawa Prefecture once in 2014 and 2016, respectively, and this is the first time that they have been issued outside Okinawa.

In Korea, as Gyeongsang coastal areas such as Busan and Ulsan are under the influence of Typhoon Nanmadol between dawn and daytime on the 19th, water bombs of up to 150mm are expected to pour along with strong winds.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Typhoon Nanmadol, which landed near Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, moved north at about 20 kilometers per hour on the 18th. The typhoon intensity is “very strong” with a central atmospheric pressure of 935 hPa (hectopascal) and a central maximum wind speed of 45 m per second.

Japan(Reuters)Even before the typhoon landed, Japan suffered a series of damage. According to Kyushu Electric Power Co., 190,000 households were affected by power outages in four prefectures, Kagoshima, Miyazaki, Kumamoto and Nagasaki, as of 6 p.m. on the 18th. According to NHK statistics, more than 8 million residents in the Kyushu area have been ordered to evacuate. The Kyushu Shinkansen line was suspended as of 1:30 p.m. on the same day and will not operate on the 19th. As of 11 a.m. on the 18th, 510 flights were also canceled. To prepare for the damage, the Japanese government has set up a countermeasure room at the crisis management center under the prime minister’s residence. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held a ministerial meeting on the afternoon of the 18th and stressed that “the highest level of vigilance is needed.”

Japan(Reuters)Typhoon Nanmadol will have a significant impact in Korea, especially in the Gyeongsang coastal area, the Korea Meteorological Administration predicted. Between early morning and daytime on the 19th, when the typhoon is closest, water bombs of up to 60mm per hour and very strong winds of 25-35m per second are expected to blow in Busan and Ulsan. The Korea Meteorological Administration said, “By the afternoon of the 19th, there will be a lot of rain of 50 to 100mm on the southern coast of Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongsangnam-do, and there will be very heavy rain of up to 150mm in Busan and Ulsan.”

In Yeongdong, Gangwon-do, cold air coming down from the northwest and warm air accompanied by the typhoon are expected to collide, causing a lot of rain of 50-100mm. It is expected to rain 5 to 40mm in eastern Jeolla Province, western inland Gyeongsang Province, and Jeju Island. Woo Jin-kyu, a forecast analyst at the Korea Meteorological Administration, said, “There can be high waves of up to 10 meters around the Gyeongsang coast, which is strongly affected by the typhoon.”

Japan(Reuters)As the school was affected by the typhoon, the academic schedule of schools in Bu, Ul, and Gyeongsang areas was also adjusted on the 19th. The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education has decided to provide remote classes for about 1,000 educational facilities, including kindergartens, elementary, middle and high schools, and special schools. The Gyeongsangnam-do Office of Education has decided to flexibly conduct shortened classes, remote classes, and discretionary holidays at the level of the Office of Education. The Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education also decided to decide on remote classes at the discretion of the principal.

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicted that most of the rain will stop in the afternoon as Typhoon Nanmadol gradually moves away from the afternoon of the 19th. Nanmadol is expected to lose its status as a typhoon on the evening of the 20th and turn into a temperate low pressure.
