Free rides, meal credits and a boss who has your back: Why chip giant’s staff feel seen at work

What beats a pat on the back for good work? Something employees can actually use.

At Micron Technology, that can mean racking up points through Bravo, an internal recognition platform where supervisors reward team members for standout work and completing projects.

Employees then redeem those points for a range of rewards – from shopping vouchers and electronic gadgets, to donations to charitable causes.

Says Mr Leroy Lee, 29, manager and senior engineer in the semiconductor firm’s process and equipment engineering department: “Sometimes, what you do may seem small, so it is a surprise to receive recognition. It makes me happy to know that what I am doing makes a difference.”

But recognition is only part of the picture. Micron pays equal attention to the small, practical details that shape how a workday actually feels.

For Mr Lee, it starts even before he steps into work every morning. A free company shuttle picks him up from a stop near his home in Punggol, cutting a one-and-a-half-hour commute to Micron Singapore’s headquarters in Woodlands to 45 minutes. The same shuttle also takes him back to the same stop after work.

“This saves me a lot of time and lets me rest,” he says. “I can sit back and not worry about missing my stop or not having a seat.”

During lunch, Mr Lee uses his staff pass to pay for meals at the 24-hour staff cafeteria as well as the in-house Killiney Kopitiam and Starbucks. The pass is refreshed with credits each day, with shift workers receiving more to cover an extra meal. If employees spend beyond that amount, they simply top up the difference.

He says: “When we feel recognised and well looked after, it motivates us to keep striving – and that has a real impact on our well-being and productivity.”

For these efforts, Micron has been named one of Singapore’s 250 best employers – a list compiled by global research firm Statista in collaboration with The Straits Times.

Mr Lee joined Micron fresh out of university in 2021. Three years in, the company sent him to Hiroshima for an 18-month stint with his Japanese counterparts – a rare posting for a young engineer still finding his footing in the industry.

Throughout his posting, his supervisors from Singapore kept in constant contact.

“They were always ready to understand what I was going through,” Mr Lee says. “They didn’t just throw solutions at me – they took a step back, listened and understood what I was feeling first. That meant a lot. And now as a manager, that’s exactly what I try to do for my engineers, too.”

In his team, new hires and existing members alike know support is there when they need it – whether that means showing them the ropes himself or having their workload redistributed before it becomes a problem.

Equipment technologist Siti Hanisah Mustafah is from a different department, and she, too, experienced that same level of support when she joined Micron three years ago.

As the youngest – and only woman – in an 11-person team in the probe operations department, she recalls initially feeling daunted by the pace of work, but very quickly, her colleagues took her under their wing.

They not only trained her on how to perform her role well, but also pushed her beyond it, whether it was stepping up to troubleshoot problems or to lead.

“When I overcome a challenge, they would uplift me with some encouraging words. These little things make a difference in my work and help to boost my confidence,” says Ms Hanisah, who is in her late 20s.

“My contributions are taken as seriously as anyone else’s. All of us are valued as team members.”

Once a month, Micron sets aside an afternoon for employees to step away from their desks and spend time together. For Ms Hanisah, one outing stood out – a laser tag game in Johor Bahru that brought together colleagues she would not otherwise have crossed paths with.

Another afternoon saw staff participating in an Amazing Race-style adventure at Gardens by the Bay.

The connections and friendships formed over such events make it easier to ask for help, speak up and look out for one another at work, notes Mr Lee.

These workplace bonds, he says, are what make people want to stay at the company.

He adds: “The friends I have made make me look forward to coming to work every single day.”
