China’s ByteDance has suspended its global launch plan for its artificial intelligence (AI) video generation model “Seedance 2.0” due to copyright controversy.
Citing U.S. IT media outlet The Information, local media in China said ByteDance has suspended the global launch of Sims 2.0, which it had originally planned for the middle of this month, after a copyright dispute with multiple Hollywood studios and streaming platforms.
Seedance 2.0 is a video generation model that can produce 15 seconds of video with a single photo and simple command input.
It received worldwide attention for its high completeness when it was released, but at the same time, it was pointed out that it was using existing copyrights without permission, and U.S. filmmakers, including Disney, the American Film Association, and the American Actors and Broadcasting Association predicted legal action.
Since then, ByteDance has said it will take steps to prevent unauthorized use of copyright-protected content, and has actually stopped creating content with photos or videos of real people, including celebrities, or introduced a self-authentication process when creating digital avatars.
Chinese media outlet ChinaZ.COM said, “The delay in the launch of Seedance 2.0 reflects the common dilemma facing Generative AI now, the explosive potential of technology and serious friction between the existing legal framework.”
