Considering that pirated websites that illegally provide Japanese cartoons are prevalent, the Japanese Cultural Agency plans to foster talents who quickly translate cartoons with AI and develop a system that automatically tracks illegal websites.
The development of AI for cartoon translation is also taking place in the private sector. Tokyo University startup, which was funded by publishers such as Shueisha and Shogakukan, has created a program in which AI learns entire comics and translates them into 18 languages by reflecting characteristics and plotlines of characters.
Using this, it is known that the time required for translation can be reduced by half compared to the previous one.
About 10% of cartoons published in Japan are translated into English, and the rate of translation into other languages is lower.
The Japanese government plans to boost overseas sales to 20 trillion yen in 2033 by promoting the export of content, including cartoons, with private companies.
