According to the BBC, the edible snail farm “Lascargo de Grand Cru” in the Langs region, about 120 kilometers from Paris, has completely disappeared. The damage is estimated at 90,000 euros.
The thieves cut off the fence around the farm on April 24, broke into the building and ran away with all the snails in stock. The farm has been supplying edible snails to high-end restaurants in France, including Michelin-starred restaurants.
Local police are tracking down the criminals by analyzing the traces left by them. The farm said it is urgently trying to secure inventory to prepare for special cases at the end of the year.
Demand for edible snails is reportedly surging in France ahead of the end-of-year season in December every year. “We will replenish inventory as soon as possible to satisfy our customers during the holiday season,” the farm said in a statement.
