OpenAI will release ChatGPT later this month exclusively for under-18s. It is equipped with a function to block provocative conversations and contact parents or authorities when a minor is in a psychological crisis.
OpenAI said on its website on the 16th, “We will soon release ChatGPT exclusively for users under the age of 18 that includes the protection of minors.” The company said, “For teenagers, safety is prioritized over freedom,” adding, “We believe minors need protection.”
This service utilizes a system that estimates age based on the user’s conversation pattern. If it is determined that you are a minor, you will be automatically connected to a dedicated ChatGPT. Some countries may require identification. OpenAI said, “There is a risk of infringement of adult privacy, but it is inevitable for the protection of minors.”
ChatGPT for under-18s does not allow cozying up or discussing suicide or self-harm. If a minor shows suicidal thoughts, the underage informs parents or considers it an emergency situation and directly contacts relevant authorities.
It also includes a parental account linkage function. This allows parents to limit their children’s usage time and set ChatGPT response principles. If your child complains of serious mental distress, you will be notified immediately.
