Recently, among Gen Z in the U.S. and the U.K., a culture of drinking colder beer with ice has become popular

There is a heated debate over this, including praise as “the freshest way to drink beer” and criticism as “ridiculous.”

According to the New York Post on July 28, the culture of “Cold One” in which beer is consumed with ice is popular on social networking services (SNS) centered on TikTok. Dozens of videos of foodies who put ice in various types of beer appear on social networking sites. A food influencer released a video clip of a Mexican cocktail of lager beer with lime juice, “Chelada,” which is topped with several ice cubes and topped with salt. He wrote that it is the freshest way to drink beer.

According to the Daily Mail, LG Electronics surveyed 2,000 Britons on their drinking habits and found that one out of three respondents aged 18 to 35 said they put ice in their glasses. Twenty percent of respondents under 35 said they put ice in their beers and wines because they feel “fresh.”

But beer lovers are protesting against the idea of putting ice in beer. Some internet users commented on the ice chelada video introduced earlier, “I don’t need ice,” while another advised, “If you put a glass in the freezer, you don’t need ice.” Some pointed out that such behavior “dilutes beer bubbles” and criticized that “the ice melts quickly and becomes like just drinking water.”

Some said that it is sensible to drink beer with ice in it. According to the same survey, 44 percent of the respondents branded those who put ice in lager beer as “uneducated people.” In addition, one out of 10 respondents said they don’t put ice in wine or beer for fear of being criticized by others.

On the other hand, some people are advocating ice beer. Some Internet users said it is a common practice to put ice in beer in Southeast Asian countries including Thailand due to the hot and humid climate. Michelin star chef David Chang also once said in a podcast that ice-filled alcoholic beverages are “delicious” and that “the only reason we don’t drink alcohol is because of our arrogance in cooking.” He recommended that people try drinking such alcoholic beverages rather than cultural relics.
