According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun and other foreign media on the 13th, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Standing Chairman of the Costa Summit will hold a meeting with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Tokyo on the 23rd to agree on satellite network-related cooperation and public-private cooperation systems.
The satellite network will use “satellite constellation” technology that launches and links a number of small satellites, which Japan and the EU see as a key technology to support digital transformation. This is because high-frequency and high-precision observations, which were difficult with only one large satellite, are possible and data exchange can take place in almost real time.
Japan aims to build more than five satellite networks by the early 2030s, but the gap with SpaceX of the U.S. and China’s satellite networks is wide. As a result, Japan and the EU will cooperate to reduce their dependence on the U.S.
