A Japanese company is drawing attention online by introducing a project that collects and visualizes human brain waves and then sells them as works of art.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in Hong Kong on the 7th, the “BWTC Metaverse Store” located in Chiyoda-gu, Tokyo, is working on a project to produce and sell works that visualize participants’ brain waves.
The BWTC said it is challenging existing art concepts, arguing that human brainwave data can go beyond a simple scientific graph and become a visual masterpiece.
It is easy to participate. If the wearer wears a special brainwave scanning device at a store and stays still for about 100 seconds, the device collects the wearer’s brainwave and converts the brainwave into an image. Participants will be rewarded with 1,000 yen.
The generated image is priced by considering the originality and aesthetic value of brain waves and the participant’s mindset during the scan. A participant’s brainwave image, which was previously viewed by the tram, was sold for 13,900 yen, and the participant’s work focused on food was traded for 7,810 yen.

Inside the store, the total amount of EEG data collected during the day is displayed on the electronic display in real time, and some works can also be found in online galleries.
“The brain data will be converted into images and the price will be set for each work,” the BWTC said. “The works will be displayed and sold publicly. We are analyzing how various mental states such as reading, concentration and meditation can affect the aesthetic value and market value of the works.”
One participant said, “I don’t think my brain waves will sell at a high price, but I wanted to participate purely for a new experience that monetizes my mind.”
It is known that the project is currently underway in various regions in Japan and in hotels and art spaces in Taiwan.
