According to Japanese media such as Kumamoto TV and NTV on the 17th, a Guinness record certificate delivery ceremony was held for the baked seaweed brand “Shiya Ichivan” produced in Kawachimachi, Kumamoto Prefecture on the 4th.
The record was set on Feb. 4 this year when three seaweed manufacturers, Tsuho, bakery Fuga, and distributor Ariake Kim Research Institute, won a batch of Shioya Ichivan seaweed (100 sheets) for 120,000 yen at a bidding event held by the Kumamoto Prefecture Fisheries Cooperative Federation.
As for the reason for writing the highest amount ever, the companies said, “Kim production in the Ariake Sea in northwest Kyushu has been low for three years due to the occurrence of red tides caused by climate change,” adding, “We wanted to support local producers and gather topics to help.”
“I want to promote high-quality seaweed, Japan’s treasure, at home and abroad through Shioya Ichivan,” he said. “I hope that the shortage of successors in the Kim industry will be resolved at least a little.”
Meanwhile, Shioya Ichivan, listed in Guinness, is known as a premium seaweed brand made by strictly selecting only fine and thin fresh seaweed. Currently, the laver can be purchased at Tsuruya Department Store in Kumamoto City, Fuga Bakery, Ariake Kim Research Institute’s direct stores, and official online malls.
