Tom Cruise, who had no connection to the academy, won his first Oscar trophy in more than 40 years since his debut.
The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which hosts the Academy Awards, announced on its official website on the 17th (local time) that it has selected three people, Tom Cruise, choreographer Debbie Allen, and production designer Win Thomas, as winners of this year’s Academy Honorary Awards. The awards will be held at the 16th Governors Awards, an Academy Award event to be held in November.

The Academy Award for Achievement is given to persons who have made special contributions to the field of film arts and science. “Tom Cruise inspired us all with his dramatic experience in film production, audience, and amazing dedication to the stunt community,” the academy said.
Tom Cruise, who debuted in 1982, failed to win the Oscar every time despite his steady work. Tom Cruise was nominated for best actor for his movies “Born on July 4” in 1990 and “Jerry Maguire” in 1997, followed by best supporting actor for “Magnolia” in 2000, and best picture for “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2023. The Associated Press reported that Tom Cruise has been nominated for the Oscars for the first time in 35 years.
