China’s college entrance exams monitor cheating by introducing AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has been fully introduced at the university entrance examination “Gao” test site in China, which has been underway since the 7th. It has begun to use AI technology to monitor violations of test takers.

According to local Chinese media including Qinghai-Bao on Tuesday, AI oversight that started in some regions including Beijing last year has been expanded to Jiangxi, Guangdong and Hubei provinces. It monitors students’ movements in real time with AI technology to catch whispers, cheating, writing advance answer sheets, delays in submitting answers and possession of violating items. An alarm is raised when a pre-set violation occurs, such as tapping a table with a finger or delivering stationery. An alarm is also raised when an abnormal noise much louder than the sound of turning over the test paper is detected.

Compared to general supervisors, AI can monitor without blind spots and can greatly improve supervisory efficiency and accuracy by preventing omission of monitoring due to fatigue, media said. The education authorities of Jiang Si-sung explained that the ultra-high-definition camera installed in all test sites can accurately capture the hand movements of the examinee.

Some test takers and their parents have expressed concerns over the protection of their privacy due to increased surveillance of AI. Some point out that AI could make a wrong decision, which could affect the course of the test takers. Education authorities in each region explained, “The AI system only plays an auxiliary role, and the supervisor is still making the final decision.”
