As camping grows in popularity as a new leisure method in China, the scale of the ‘camping economy’ steadily expands

Related industries are accelerating the upgrading of camping equipment and the launch of new products in line with changing consumption trends. The popularity of camping, which has become hot in recent years, has led to the development of related industries such as tents, tents, folding tables, chairs, and camping sites.

“The weather is good these days, so more customers are inquiring about camping equipment,” said an employee at a DeCartron store in Shanghai’s civil port district. “Home tent products with integrated shades and tents are suitable for park camping, and are quick and convenient to install.”

A customer who visited the store said, “I want to rent tents, camping tables, chairs and bicycles for camping this weekend. The rental fee for the tent is about 50 yuan, which is economical.” He added, “I will try it this time and consider purchasing related equipment then when camping improves.”

According to a report released by iMay Consulting, as technology advances, equipment upgrades are also noticeable in camping consumption. In the past, the composition was simple with tents and sleeping bags. Now, however, the company has upgraded the modularization system from a tent with a projector installed on the shade to a refrigerator for vehicles that guarantees freshness of ingredients to a smart tent that monitors ultrafine dust (PM2.5) concentration. Listed companies are also actively engaged in the camping economy in line with the new consumption trend.

“Starting with the Leung San Tent brand in 2003, we launched a variety of outdoor clothing and equipment such as backpacks and hiking sticks,” camping equipment company Mugaodi said in a recent meeting of investor-related events. “We continue to upgrade our entire product categories and high-performance outdoor products ranging from camping to tracking.” Many camping equipment producers are actively responding to market demand by improving their design and innovation capabilities and R&D capabilities. Chinese outdoor brand Torred said in its annual report last year that outdoor camping enthusiasts are continuously innovating and upgrading their product structure as they seek functionality, daily life, and weight reduction of their products. The core market of China’s camping economy is also showing solid growth.

According to iMei Consulting, the core camping market in China reached 213.97 billion yuan last year, expanding 60.4 percent year-on-year. Thanks to this, the overall camping market increased 46.8 percent to 1.1554 trillion yuan.

By 2030, the size of the core market is expected to increase to 487.98 billion yuan. Some analysts say that as consumption upgrades increase, more consumers participate in camping activities, resulting in a large space for development of camping and related industries.

“The competition in the camping market has become diversified and fierce in recent years,” Zyan Consulting said. “Domestic and foreign camping brands are flocking to the market one after another to attract consumers by providing quality camping products and services.” “Chinese brands are gradually being recognized in the middle and high-end markets based on their cost-effectiveness and deep understanding of the domestic market,” he said.
