Mexican government sues Google for renaming ‘Mexico Bay’ to ‘US Bay’ on map

According to AFP, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said at a press conference on the 9th that “the lawsuit has already been filed.” However, President Sheinbaum did not comment on the specific timing.

Earlier, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill to convert President Donald Trump’s executive order to federal law to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico only to the U.S.

However, it is unclear whether the bill will gain sufficient support in the Senate.

Google changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the United States for users in the United States from February 10th.

Google explained that this is a measure in response to President Trump’s January 20 executive order, which called for standardization of U.S.-centered nominations.

Shortly after taking office, President Trump changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico and required Alaska’s Dinali to be marked as Mount McKinley.

He first declared February 9 as “America’s Day” as a follow-up to the executive order.

The Associated Press, an international news agency, was restricted from entering the White House for violating President Trump’s guidelines to change the Gulf of Mexico only to the United States. Regarding the lawsuit filed by the AP, the court ruled that “the Trump administration’s action violates the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of expression, and is a violation of the media.”
