U.N. human rights envoy to visit S. Korea

The United Nations’ top human rights envoy will visit South Korea this week for the opening of a U.N. office tasked with monitoring North Korea’s human rights situation, the Foreign Ministry said Monday.

Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the U.N. high commissioner for human rights, will arrive in Seoul on Tuesday and host the opening ceremony of the U.N. field office later that day, the ministry said in a press release.

During his three-day stay, Zeid is also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on President Park Geun-hye and meet with top South Korean officials, including National Assembly speaker Chung Ui-hwa, Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and Unification Minister Hong Yong-pyo.

He will also meet with elderly South Korean women who were forced into sexual slavery for Japanese soldiers during World War II, hold a lecture at Seoul’s Yonsei University and meet with members of civil society. (Yonhap)
