The story of finding cancer confirmed faster through generative artificial intelligence (AI) ChatGPT than a doctor’s diagnosis is a hot topic

Artificial intelligence (Generative AI) is not just good at drawing. When a woman who experienced unusual symptoms asked a question related to ChatGPT, she was diagnosed as “cancer,” and the story turned out to be actual cancer.

According to the Daily Mail in the U.K. on Sunday, Marlee Ganlator, a woman living in France, started to show symptoms of sweating and itchy skin last year. Marlee Ganlator thought the symptoms were caused by anxiety and sadness caused by her father’s death in January of the same year. Her doctor also judged that, and the test results were all normal.

However, out of curiosity, Ganlator entered his symptoms into ChatGPT. Then ChatGPT replied that Ganlator could have blood cancer. When I told my friends about this, they told them to “ignore” and Ganlator laughed off ChatGPT’s response.

A year later, Ganlater developed another symptom and went back to the hospital. He had chest pain and fatigue, and through a thorough examination, he found out that there was a large tumor in his lungs. His doctor diagnosed him with a blood cancer called Hodgkin’s lymphoma. ChatGPT’s answer was correct.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a cancer that occurs in lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. Lymphoma is a malignant tumor that occurs in lymphoid tissue and spreads regardless of the body’s regulatory action as immune cells turn into tumors. It is divided into non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Hodgkin’s lymphoma depending on the tissue type.

Ganlator started receiving chemotherapy in March this year. He emphasized, “If you have a problem with your body, it is important to actively recognize it.”

According to Asan Medical Center in Seoul, Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a disease with characteristic tissue patterns and unusual cancer cells (Reed-Sternberg cells) that resemble owl eyes, mainly developing at a young age and then slowly growing over several years.

It occurs mainly within the lymphatic system, and is characterized by starting with one lymph node, affecting the side lymph nodes, and gradually starting to affect the entire body lymph nodes through adjacent lymph nodes.

The most common symptom of Hodgkin’s lymphoma is cervical lymph node enlargement. Then there are armpit lymph nodes and groin lymph node enlargement. In a state of advanced disease, fever of unknown cause, night sweats, and weight loss (more than 10% reduction over 6 months) may be seen.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma has a high cure rate when radiotherapy and anticancer drug therapy are performed. Treatment varies depending on the stage of the disease, the site of occurrence, symptoms, and the patient’s age.

There was a similar case in the U.S. The Sun, a British media outlet, told the story of the man who had difficulty bending his finger since February last year. The doctor suspected rheumatoid arthritis, but related tests showed negative results.

Meanwhile, A suffered from severe abdominal pain in September of that year and was diagnosed with gastric acid reflux at the hospital.

However, after realizing that she had another problem with her body, she left a symptom on ChatGPT. ChatGPT replied, “I think I have Hashimoto’s disease.” Hashimoto’s disease is a disease that is highly likely to cause thyroid cancer and other diseases by causing inflammation when immune cells in the body attack the thyroid gland.

Since then, A has actually been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease and has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

“If I hadn’t asked ChatGPT, the cancer would have spread to other places while taking arthritis drugs,” A said. “ChatGPT saved my life.”
