A woman in the UK has died after chiropractic (spine correction) treatment she received to relieve neck pain, shocking her.
Joanna Kowalczyk, 29, from Gateshead, died after chiropractic treatment, according to British media The Sun on January 28 (local time).
In September 2021, Joanna suffered a neck injury while training at the gym. She visited the hospital complaining of a severe headache, and medical staff recommended a lumbar puncture test, but Joanna voluntarily chose chiropractic, an alternative treatment, after being discharged.
He had previously suffered from migraines and joint hypermotile syndrome, and was not diagnosed, but was also found to have connective tissue disorders.
Joanna was recommended for further examination by the hospital, but decided not to take it and get chiropractic. It turned out that the spinal corrector who treated Joanna performed the treatment without checking his hospital records.
Joanna has received a total of four chiropractic treatments since September, and the last treatment was conducted on October 16. Neck joint correction was performed, and immediately after the procedure, she complained of severe dizziness, vomiting, numbness in her hands and feet, and speech disorders.
Paramedics were also dispatched, but they mistook the symptoms for migraines and did not take them to the hospital, but eventually, their condition worsened rapidly the next day and they were rushed to the hospital.
Joanna was treated on a ventilator after arriving at the hospital, but eventually died on October 19.
“There was a spontaneous arterial dissection, but chiropractic treatment worsened the condition,” coroner Liila Benones said of Joanna’s cause of death.
He recommended the introduction of a medical record verification procedure before chiropractic treatment and emphasized, “Patients must carefully consider their health conditions before choosing alternative treatment.”
