First ice appears in Gangwon as cold weather hits nation

The first ice was reported in Daegwallyeong, Gangwon Province, as the morning low dropped to the lowest of the season, the Korea Meteorological Administration said Wednesday, adding that temperatures will continue to drop throughout this week.

The temperature fell to below minus 5 degrees Celsius in southern mountainous regions Wednesday morning, and the cold snap came eight days after the first subzero temperature was recorded in Gangwon Province last week.

The KMA issued a cold-weather advisory for Gyeonggi, Gangwon and North Chungcheong provinces on Wednesday.

A cold-weather advisory is issued when the temperature drops more than 10 degrees from the previous day or the morning low falls below minus 12 degrees Celsius for two days.

The morning low was 9.2 degrees in Seoul on Wednesday, 6.9 degrees in Daejeon, 9.3 degrees in Gwangju, 10 degrees in Daegu and 12.9 degrees Celcius in Busan.

Weather forecasters said Seoul had recorded the biggest temperature drop on Wednesday morning, 10 degrees lower than Monday morning.

Although the temperature during the day will stay around 18 to 21 degrees Celsius, strong winds and further temperature drops are likely to come after rainfall on Thursday, the KMA said.

According to forecasters, typhoon Vongfong has indirectly influenced this weather pattern on the peninsula.

The KMA warned that crops could freeze and roads may become iced up in regions where the cold weather advisory is issued.
