Cold weather advisory issued

The Korea Meteorological Administration issued a cold-weather advisory for Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces on Wednesday, warning temperatures will continue to drop throughout this week.

The temperate dropped to below minus 5 degrees Celsius in southern mountainous regions Wednesday morning, and the first ice was reported in Daegwallyeong, Gangwon Province.

A cold weather advisory is issued when the temperature drops more than 10 degrees from the previous day or the morning low falls below minus 12 degrees Celsius for two days.

The morning low in Seoul was 9.2 degrees on Wednesday, 6.9 degrees in Daejeon, 9.3 degrees in Gwangju, 10 degrees in Daegu and 12.9 degrees in Busan.

Weather forecasters said Seoul had recorded the largest temperature drop on Wednesday morning, 10 degrees lower than Monday morning.

The KMA warned that crops could freeze and roads may become iced up in regions where the cold weather advisory is issued.

Although the temperature during the day will stay around 18 to 21 degrees Celsius, strong winds and further temperature drops are likely to come after rainfall on Thursday this week, the KMA added.

Typhoon Vongfong has indirectly influenced this weather pattern on the peninsula, weather forecasters said.
